Day 155: We Found ELK In The Valley!
Today we’re visiting the Cataloochee Valley Elk Viewing Area in the Great Smoky Mountains, NC. The valley was given its name by its original inhabitants, the Cherokee, meaning “standing tall,” likely a reference to the many ridges that surround this remote place (the drive in takes 40 min on a winding, dirt road).

Day 154: Peaking On The Blue Ridge Parkway
This hidden gem is one of the highest elevations trails on the Parkway at over 6,000’. It showcases a unique type of ecosystem, passing through moss covered spruce and fir forest and along a ridge to the summit of highest of the Great Balsam Mountains.

Day 153: An Unexpected Treat
We need an easy day after so much elevation yesterday. This trail starts in a flowering meadow, enters the woods to follows a stream and comes out on a collection of huge boulders flowing down the stream bed.

Day 150: We Hiked To The Highest Falls
This beautiful, woodsy, rocky trail lots of uphill for a good workout. It takes you to a beautiful waterfall, the tallest along the entire Blue Ridge Parkway.

Day 149: Adventure In Devil’s Marbleyard
This rocky trail takes you up to a boulder field near the top of the mountain. We scrambled about halfway up and sat there, taking in the views of the valley below and surrounding mountains.
