Day 68: Climbing to the Top!

Winter

time of year

We climbed the Big Walker Lookout Tower! We’re both scared of heights so it felt like a real accomplishment climbing 100’ into the air on a tower that shakes as you get closer to the top ($8/adult). The man in the country store seemed very nice and promised that however high we made it would be worth it and he was absolutely right about it. The views were amazing. Looking north, you’ll see the patchwork quilt of the farmlands. Looking south, you’ll see the untouched wilderness of Jefferson National Forest. The country store sells locally made mountain crafts.

We drove Crystal Springs Recreation Area, Wytheville, VA. This place turns out to be about mountain biking as much as hiking. We went and played on the obstacles in the skills park – who needs bikes to have fun in a bike park? We had a nice little picnic there before heading on.

After a long drive through the country we checked into Blowing Rock Inn, Blowing Rock, NC. This is a really cute Motor Lodge just a short walk from town. They’ve managed to modernize the amenities but keep the charm – we even have a screen door.

Price: $223/2nights, with $22 back from Booking,com
