Day 45: Farewell to Hilton Head

Autumn

time of year

We drove a few minutes down the road to visit the Audubon Newhall Preserve

Hilton Head, SC a small mid-city park that lets you step out of the city and into nature. You can still hear traffic but it smells fresh and woody and when we were there it was so windy that we mostly just heard wind in the trees.

Since it wasn’t raining just yet we decided to drive to Fish Haul Beach Park

just a few minutes away. About halfway there it started to pour. We walked out to get a last look at the beach in the rain. Fish Haul is in Bay Gall, one of Hilton Head Island’s historic Gullah neighborhoods. This quiet beach overlooks Port Royal Sound.

Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park

was another few minutes away, so we decided that while we were right there to see that, too. This park was created to generate recognition for Native Islanders and the Gullah Geechee culture and tells their story through exhibits and educational plaques.

And just like that, it’s time to head home

to work and celebrate the upcoming holidays. This trip was a bit of an exploratory visit to the area. We saw several places that we’d never been to before and made notes of places we’d like to come back spend more time in, most notably the Golden Isles of Georgia and Bluffton, SC.

Be on the lookout for our next adventure, it’s just around the corner.
