Day 36: Heart of the Mountains

Autumn

time of year

We’re back on the road again!

We’re going to spend Thanksgiving in the mountains!

On the way we passed Keowee-Toxaway State Park, SC ($0) and decided to take a short walk on the Natural Bridge Trail (1.4 total miles out and back, 219’ elevation). It was a pretty trail through tunnels of Mountain Laurel to a nice little waterfall but the “natural bridge” is some large rocks you can use to walk across the stream, not a rock arch as we were expecting from the name. It’s also listed on their map as a loop but is actually an out and back.

Keowee-Toxaway also has a very pretty lake that we stopped to admire for a bit. The fall colors set it off beautifully.

Back on the road, we drove straight to Mountain Fresh Grocery

Highlands, NC to get a Mountain Fresh pizza for dinner and slice pumpkin pie for dessert tomorrow. Then we drove to Ingles to get salad and veggies and dip for tomorrow.

We checked into The Wells Hotel

Cashiers, NC ($747/4 nights). This is a lovely, upscale, rustic-style mountain hotel and it feels like a really special place to spend our holiday weekend.

After our salad and pizza dinner

we walked over to Buck’s Coffee Cafe for a Maple Spice Latte and went for a walk around town. Cashiers has a nice park, a number of high end retail and rustic design establishments and a pretty little pond.
