Day 21: Start Your Engines

Autumn

time of year

As we were driving through the beautiful New York countryside…

We happened across the Watkins Glen International Speedway. On a whim, we decided to see if they would let us in to see the racetrack. The man at the gate said that we could go to the stands, and to our surprise, there were people training on the track! We got to watch 2 classes of cars zoom by in laps on what’s called a “Track Day”. We were the only spectators there. The sound of those cars zooming by is something else! What an incredible experience.

A stop at Susquehannock State Forest, Ole Bill State Park, PA to stretch our legs.

($0). We went for a walk on the nature trail around the beaver pond. We saw the beaver lodge and some of the damn but didn’t get to see the beavers. No cell reception at all so download your maps for the area before you go. We had to pull out a paper map to find the next town.

We drove on through the Village of Cross Fork, PA

There were signs along the road thanking everyone for a successful snake hunt. What???I had to look it up to see what this was all about!

2 quick stops at Scenic Overlooks in Sproul State Forest, PA

Fish Dam Run Scenic View and Two Rock Run Overlook, both found along Pennsylvania Wilds’ Elk Scenic Drive (route 144). I’m sure it’s a beautiful drive all year but with the peak fall colors it seemed extra special. Cold and windy outside but beautiful views of the mountain’s fall colors.

A very long day of driving.

We finally got to our hotel and checked into Sleep Inn near Penn State, State College, PA ($130/night). We went to Wegmans (an upscale grocery store) to pick up dinner to eat at the hotel. Way too city for us, so very much traffic!
