Day 174: Castle Cliffs And Waterfalls

Summer

time of year

Robert H. Treman State Park, Ithaca, NY. $9/car. Rim Trail to Gorge Trail (4.5 mile loop, 810’ elevation). We started at the lower end parking area. Most of the trail between the lower falls, where they offer swimming in the summer, until you get to a great view of 115’ Lucifer Falls and the stone staircase, is through the woods. The returning Gorge Trail will take you down those steps to view the big falls and some other smaller ones, then you’ll follow the stream much of the way back and then finish through the woods again. The cliff walls and stone pathway near Lucifer Falls makes it feel very castle-like. If you’re short on time do the short loop, almost all the bigger features are on it anyway.

Ithaca Falls, Ithaca, NY (0.2 mile total out and back). A large waterfall in the middle of town. The trail to the falls is fairly short but a little rocky. 175’ in width and 150’ in height, apparently Ithaca Falls is 1 of 150 waterfalls within 10 miles of Ithaca and surrounding areas.
