Day 167: Downeast Blueberry Pie

Summer

time of year

After a 4 hour drive we finally made it to the Trailhead for the Cutler Bold Coast Trail, Cutler, ME. We did the short loop connecting the Coastal Trail, Black Point Brook Trail and Inland Trail (5.5 miles, 475’). Once you reach the rocky coast there are overlooks, each one with a slightly different, stunningly beautiful view. The forest was full of big trees, lush mossy areas and lichen. This is one of my new all time favorite hikes.

Easternmost Point in the Contiguous US, West Quoddy Head Lighthouse, Lubec, ME. This is officially the closest to Europe that Chris has ever been. We were there so late that we didn’t have time to do the trails around it but we would have liked to. One 0.5 mile one takes you to an overlook.

Helen’s Restaurant, Machias, ME for salads and their award winning blueberry pie. Machias is known for their wild blueberries so our expectations were high going in. The crust was average but the filling was all tiny, delicious blueberries.

Bluebird Motel, Machias, ME This is an older motor hotel. The room is very small but otherwise has everything you need. It’s also very stuffy and I’m not sure what the smell is from, fabric softener or cleaning supplies, but it is overwhelming. I had trouble sleeping with it and woke up several times thinking I was having trouble breathing.

Price: $130/night
