White House Farm Spring House. Just a quick stop in the side of the road to see the oldest standing in West Virginia. Unfortunately it’s a privately owned residence so we weren’t able to see anything else.

Cool Springs Nature Preserve, We took Linda’s Loop (1 mile) around the outside of the property. A very nice walk with lots of birdsong, insects and flowers and a couple of tunnel-like paths that give your walk an almost story-book feel, but no spring to be found.

Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races, Charles Town, WV. We got there right as the last horses were leaving the track. The inside was a maze of tables and slot machines.

Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, Harpers Ferry, WV. We parked at the main park entrance visitor’s center and took a bus into lower town, about 1.6 miles away. The park ranger suggested a 2 mile loop to us that took us through the historic town (I was surprised to see people actually live in some of the houses and have shops in others), onto a portion of the AT, up to Jefferson Rock, past the cemetery and by several stone ruins. I think if you come you would get as much out of wandering the town and then along the river. I’m not sure why but I hadn’t expected there to be so much road noise everywhere. There is one other 4 mile hike here that takes you across the train trestle to an overview of Harpers Ferry but it’s too hot to do today.
