Day 118: Thank You, Wisconsin Glacier

Spring

Food run at Meijer, Columbus, OH. No wonder the founders became billionaires, this is a great store. We recommend the blueberry/lemon yogurt parfait.

Topiary Garden Park, Columbus, OH. The Topiary Garden in Old Deaf School Park is the only public park of its kind, in the world. The Topiary Garden is a living recreation of Georges Seurat’s famous post-Impressionist painting, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of LaGrande Jatte.
The idea for the topiary garden was conceived and sculpted in 1989. The Topiary Garden has appeared in a multitude of magazines, periodicals, books, and documentaries including Life, National Geographic, The Wall Street Journal, and programs aired on the BBC.

Currently, the topiary garden could use a little TLC. The bushes need a trim and some have died off and need to be replaced. Even so, I’m glad to have visited it.

Rockbridge State Nature Preserve, Rockbridge, OH. (1 mile loop, approx. 125’ elevation). This trail passes by beautiful green fields before entering the woods to take you to the natural bridge. Rockbridge’s natural arch or bridge is more than 100 feet long and 10 to 20 feet wide, and gracefully arches 50 feet across a ravine. It is considered the largest natural bridge in Ohio.

Cantwell Cliffs, Rockbridge, OH. (1 mile loop, 249’ elevation). This gorgeous trail takes you past stunning cliffs. We took the path through the gorge and it was beautiful. You pass a huge cave area and walk along the cliff top before heading back to the car.

Rock House, Logan, OH (0.8 mile loop, 203’ elevation). Rock House is unique in the Hocking Hills region, is a tunnel-like corridor with window-like openings situated midway up a 150-foot cliff of Blackhand sandstone. It’s by far the most crowded trail we’ve been on in the Hocking Hills area, full of large, loud families. Definitely go see the Rock House , it’s very cool, but I’d recommend trying to find a time few people will be there so you can really appreciate the experience. We’re planning to do that next timeI’m we come through this area.

21 Horse Cave and Twin Falls Box Canyon, Logan, OH. Park in the parking area across from the rappelling parking area. The trail is not marked but follow it straight until you see signs on the right that say “no horses past this point” and follow the trail up to the right. The cave is very cool, deeper than it is wide. After you’ve seen the cave, go back to where you turned right to find the cave, and follow the trail on a little further to 2 trickling waterfalls into a spectacular box canyon. We climbed up onto the ledges where it’s even more beautiful and even found a group of pitcher plants along the side of the hill. What an incredible place to end a day of hiking.

Old Man’s Cave General Store, Logan, OH which has 24 flavors of soft serve ice cream. Yes, this is our 2nd visit here. It’s a genius business idea, cool, yummy ice cream just outside a very popular state park.
